The College of Engineering announces with great sadness the passing of Dr. Steven M. Ridenour, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, who passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 79. His life’s work reflected a rare combination of intellectual rigor, practical ingenuity, and unwavering dedication to students.
Raised on a farm in Indiana, Dr. Ridenour developed an early understanding of mechanical systems through hands-on experience by repairing equipment, restoring vehicles, and solving problems out of necessity. These formative lessons shaped his belief that engineering is most meaningful when theory meets applications. Influenced by both family and environment, he cultivated a mindset grounded in curiosity, resilience, and innovation.
Dr. Ridenour earned his Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University and his Doctor of Arts in Engineering from the University of Miami. Joining Temple University in 1975, he rose through the faculty ranks, becoming a full Professor in 1990 and served as a cornerstone of the Mechanical Engineering Department for decades.
A forward-thinking educator and researcher, Dr. Ridenour was an early advocate for alternative energy systems, particularly solar heating and energy-efficient building design. He developed multiple software tools in HVAC and energy analysis and contributed to published works on sustainable engineering. Equally significant was his commitment to students, most notably through the establishment of the Ridenour Award for Best Senior Design, which continues to recognize innovation and excellence.
Dr. Ridenour’s legacy endures in the students he mentored, the programs he shaped, and the spirit of applied engineering he championed. The College extends its deepest condolences to his family and all who were impacted by his life and work.
