Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering

The Ph.D. is designed to develop electrical engineers with an understanding of the importance of electrical engineering to analyze the literature, develop theory, perform experimentation and develop their own methodologically rigorous research studies. Research projects within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are supported through grants from the Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation and the Naval Research Lab. You will have the opportunity to complete a Ph.D. with emphases in the following areas of research:

  • Wireless communication
  • Machine learning
  • Shipboard crane control
  • Neural signal processing
  • Power optimization
  • Sensor networks
  • Humanoid robotics
  • Suborbital payload design and embedded systems
  • Microelectonics and VLSI
  • Statistical optimal control
  • Tactile imaging system
  • Hyperspectral imaging

Curriculum Requirements

The Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the master’s degree, including 15 semester hours of Ph.D.-level didactic coursework, and 15 semester hours associated with Ph.D. examinations and dissertation research.

Because the Ph.D. is an individualized program, students will meet with the department’s Graduate Program Coordinator in the first semester to discuss your plan of study, which outlines all required courses and the program-requirement sequence.

  • Preliminary Exam: Students who matriculate into the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering are required to take the preliminary exam before the end of their third semester. This exam evaluates the breadth of knowledge in Electrical Engineering and consists of an oral exam with a supporting written document.
  • Dissertation Proposal: Within one year of passing the preliminary exam, students must develop a written research proposal and present it at an open college seminar. Students are considered doctoral candidates after the dissertation proposal has been approved. 
  • Dissertation:The Ph.D. program culminates with the dissertation and dissertation defense. The defense is an open university seminar in which students present the concept and results of their research, followed by examination from the Dissertation Committee.

If your interests span across more than one engineering area, then the Ph.D. in Engineering may be appropriate for you. While the program is completed within a specific department, it offers more interdisciplinary study.
