The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers you the opportunity to complete a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. Grant funding for this research comes from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the California Department of Transportation, and the National Science Foundation. Temple Engineering focuses on the following research areas:
- Analysis of the effect of scour on bridge stability
- Design of sustainable building
- Development of new highway pavement materials using plastic waste
- Development of effective traffic signals
- New techniques for effective construction management
- Geophysical imaging and measurement applications
- Geotechnical instrumentation and sensor technology
- Evaluation of deep foundations and earthquake engineering
The Ph.D. in Civil Engineering program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the master’s degree, including 15 semester hours of Ph.D.-level didactic coursework, and 15 semester hours associated with Ph.D. examinations and dissertation research.
Because the Ph.D. is an individualized program, you will meet with the department’s Graduate Program Coordinator in the first semester to discuss the “Plan of Study,” which outlines all required courses and the program-requirement sequence.
- Qualifying Exam: If you are entering the Ph.D. program without a master’s degree are required to take the qualifying exam. This exam evaluates the breadth of knowledge in Civil Engineering and consists of an oral exam with a supporting written document.
- Preliminary Exam: All students will be required to take a preliminary exam after the completion of their coursework. This exam evaluates communication, research and information-synthesis skills.
- Dissertation Proposal: Within one year of passing the preliminary exam, students must develop a written research proposal and present it at an open college seminar. You will be considered doctoral candidates after the dissertation proposal has been approved.
- Dissertation: The Ph.D. program culminates with the dissertation and dissertation defense. The defense is an open university seminar in which the concepts and results of their research are presented, followed by examination from the Dissertation Committee.
If your interests span across more than one engineering area, then the Ph.D. in Engineering may be appropriate for you. While the program is completed within a specific department, it offers more interdisciplinary study.
