You will have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty of the College of Engineering, College of Science and Technology, School of Medicine, School of Podiatric Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, College of Public Health and Fox Chase Cancer Center. Research support is provided through extramural grants sucha as the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association and the Susan B. Komen Foundation.

The Department of Bioengineering offers the opportunity to complete a Ph.D. in Bioengineering within the following research areas:

  • Soft tissue mechanics
  • Injury biomechanics
  • Targeted drug delivery
  • Brain-computer interface
  • Tissue and regenerative engineering
  • Smart biomaterials
  • Tissue spectroscopy
  • Bioimaging

Curriculum Requirements

The Ph.D. in Bioengineering program requires a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the master’s degree, including 15 semester hours of Ph.D.-level didactic coursework, and 15 semester hours associated with Ph.D. examinations and dissertation research. Because the Ph.D. is an individualized program, you will meet with the department’s Graduate Program Coordinator in the first semester to discuss the “Plan of Study,” which outlines all required courses and the program-requirement sequence.

  • Preliminary Exam: Students who matriculate into the Ph.D. in Bioengineering are required to take the preliminary exam before the end of their third semester. This exam evaluates the breadth of knowledge in Bioengineering and consists of an oral exam with a supporting written document. 
  • Dissertation Proposal: Within one year of passing the preliminary exam, students must develop a written research proposal and present it at an open college seminar. Students are considered doctoral candidates after the dissertation proposal has been approved.
  • Dissertation: The Ph.D. program culminates with the dissertation and dissertation defense. The defense is an open university seminar in which students present the concepts and results of their research, followed by examination from the Dissertation Committee.Temple Bioengineering faculty research details are available here.
